A Summer of Dwelling in the Word

2 July, 2023 - 3 September, 2023

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Heb 4:12, NIV). “All Scripture is inspired [“god-breathed”] by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work” (2Timothy 3:16-17, NRSV). We believe that God speaks through his Word. This summer our teaching series is going to focus on spending time in the Scriptures and learning the practice of “Dwelling in the Word” (also called “Lectio Divina,” Latin for “Divine Reading”) which is a more contemplative reading of Scripture. Each Sunday we will spend time listening for God to speak into our lives through the voice of Scripture. We will spend time dwelling and reflecting on a passage that the speaker has found particularly meaningful in their walk with God. We will spend time in the service reading and reflecting on the passage. More specifically, each week the passage that’s been selected will be read aloud twice. After we’ve finished reading it the first time, everyone will be encouraged to spend a moment in silence to let it sink in. Then, after a couple of minutes of silence, we will read it aloud a second time. During this time we will invite you to reflect on these questions: What words, phrases, or images stood out to you? Why? What does this passage say about what God desires to accomplish in us? How would you like to respond to what God says in this passage? After we have spent a few minutes reflecting in silence, there will be different opportunities to share. Then the speaker will preach on the passage, both expounding its meaning and highlighting how God has personally used the passage in their own lives. Please join us!
