Our Mission
At Greenfield Community Church, we see ourselves as
Christ followers joining God on mission and growing in our love for God, neighbours, and one another.
Christ followers — Jesus calls us to follow him (Matthew 4:19, 9:19, 16:24; John 12:16). We believe a follower is a disciple who not only has personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, but also seeks to live out that faith in practical and profound ways daily.
Joining God on mission — We believe that the Triune God is working to reconcile all things to himself (Colossians 1:20). All members of the Trinity are involved in this rescue mission: God the Father sends the Son; Father and Son send the Spirit (John 3:17, 17:3; Acts 2). And we believe this same God invites his people to join him on mission in the world, sent as his ambassadors to be salt and light in both word and deed (Matthew 5:13-16; John 20:21, 2Corinthians 5:18-21) and fulfil the commission to make disciples of all the nations (Matthew 28:16-20).
Growing — We believe that Christ followers should be continually growing in their faith and obedience (Colossians 1:10; Romans 1:5, 16:26). This growth is a work of God through the Holy Spirit (1Corinthians 3:7), in cooperation with the believer (Philippians 2:12-13), in the context of the community of faith (Ephesians 4:15-16; 2 Thessalonians 1:3; 2 Peter 3:18). We also believe this growth is manifested in three directions: up (love for God), in (love for one another), and out (love for our neighbours).
Love for God — Jesus identified the greatest commandment as “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:29-30; cf. Matthew 22:37-38; Luke 10:27; quoting Deuteronomy 6:5). Loving God means keeping his commandments (1 John 4:19-21). This is a task of the whole person (heart, mind, soul, and strength) and the entire faith community. We grow in our love for God as we worship corporately, engage in spiritual practices, care for one another, and love and serve others — both together and individually.
Love for Neighbours — Jesus linked loving God with loving your neighbour as yourself (Mark 12:31; cf. Matthew 22:39-40; Luke 10:27; quoting Leviticus 19:18). Loving our neighbours sums up the whole Torah (Romans 13:10; Galatians 5:13-14; James 2:8) and even extends to our enemies (Matt 5:43-44; Luke 6:27, 35). We believe that this love must be intentionally lived out locally in our neighbourhoods as well as among our networks of relationships through hospitality, service, and justice. And as Jesus teaches in the parable of the Good Samaritan, this love is costly love for anyone that comes across our path who is in need (Luke 10:25-37).
Love for One Another — In the Gospel of John, Jesus gives his followers a new commandment: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35, 15:9-17; 1 John 3:11-12, 23, 5:2). This love is only possible because of God’s prior love for us (1 John 4:19) and is to be manifested in a clear commitment to living life together (Acts 2:42-47, 4:32-35; Hebrews 10:25) as a community of faith that celebrates our diversity as the body of Christ and use our gifts and abilities to equip and serve one another and bear one another’s burdens (Romans 12:3-8; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4:1-16).
