SUMMARY:For the Sake of Others - 2025 All Church Conference
DESCRIPTION:2025 All Church Conference \nFor the Sake of Others\nWith Witty Sandle\nBreakout sessions by Chantalle Grant\, Ann Kuehn\, Clinton Porritt\, and Cory Siebel \nOur spiritual formation happens in the context of our lived experiences and against the backdrop of our cultures and societies. For better or for worse\, we live in a world that shapes us. One of the pervasive influences in the West is that of individualism. The language of “rights” and “choice” predominates\, and the spirit of the age seems to dwell on the words\, “Me\, Myself and I.” Yet\, we also recognize that we serve a God who sees each of us at a personal level\, and not simply part of an anonymous collective. So how do we hold these things in balance? Witty will explore this tension by suggesting that we shift towards an “other-centred” mindset. This refocus will enable us to move from our self-interested narcissistic impulses\, whilst holding on to a sense of our individuality. \nAdditional Info: This conference will include snacks and beverages on Friday night as well as a box lunch on Saturday. Childcare on Saturday (Kindergarten through grade six) is available. \nWitty Sandle is a Spiritual Director\, Retreat Facilitator and Educator. She graduated from Portland Seminary in 2019 with a Masters in Spiritual Formation. She is also a certified Myers Briggs practitioner\, an enneagram enthusiast\, and a credentialed career counsellor. Her career has spanned work with youth and university students as well as adults at various stages of their lives. She is deeply interested in exploring the topic of vocation in all its manifestations. In January 2025\, she left her position at the King’s University as the campus Career and Vocational Counsellor\, to focus on spiritual direction and retreat work. She explains\,  “the heart of my practice is to provide attentive and safe places where people can explore all they are called to be and do. Part of that work is hosting spaces where we can be attentive to the whispers of God’s Spirit in our lives.” \nWitty has been married to Mark\, (a history Prof at King’s University)\, for 39 years. She has three adult children and 4 grandchildren who are her “little loves.” She enjoys being behind a camera\, eating curries and cheesecake\, is a podcast nerd\, a coffee snob\, lover of books\, movies and finding bargains! Find out more about Witty’s work at: www.everydaypilgrimages.org \n\nTentative Schedule \nFriday Evening (7:00-8:30 pm) \nWelcome & Worship (7:00-7:30 pm) \nPlenary #1: All in All for the Sake of Others (7:30-8:30 pm)\nGenesis 1:1 & 31 – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…31 God saw all that he had made\, and it was very good. In this session\, we will explore the myriad ways in which the good creation of God is interconnected and co-dependent. Nothing exists in isolation. \nSaturday (9:00am-3:30pm) \nCoffee & Welcome (9:00-9:15 am) \n Worship (9:15-9:45 am) \nPlenary #2: Loving Yourself for the Sake of Others (9:45-10:45 am)\n1 John 4:19 – “We love because he first loved us.” This session makes the claim that loving self is not a selfish act but foundational to moving through the world in healthy ways. This includes naming our gifts and wounds within the circumstances of our stories. \nMorning Breakout Sessions (11:00 – 12 noon)\n \nOption 1: “Everything Affects Everything: Understanding our Connectedness to Creation” with Clint Porritt. Genesis 2:8 – “And God planted a garden…” The connectedness between plants and microbes that extends under the earth\, gives us a small picture of the connectedness of all creation. When we tend God’s garden\, with care\, with creativity\, with attentiveness\, with reverence\, within community\, we are fulfilling a sacred task. Our understanding of connectedness should lead us to a place of deeper awe\, humility\, and responsibility. Clint Porritt has 25+ years of faith formation experience through teaching\, spiritual direction\, and program development. Prior to joining the staff at Star of the North Retreat Centre as program coordinator\, Clint served 12 years as a scripture and theology instructor at Mount Carmel Bible College in Edmonton. He holds a Master of Theological Studies from Taylor Seminary and is passionate about the intersection of spiritual formation\, theology\, creation-care\, and social justice. \nOption 2: “Come Away with Me: God’s Invitation to Us All” with Ann Kuehn. What would it feel like to step away from the noise of life and spend a day in quiet with the Holy Trinity? In this session\, Ann Kuehn invites you to explore the rhythm of a one-day silent retreat —moments of prayer\, reflection\, and stillness that can refresh your spirit. You’ll learn practical ways to create this sacred space\, whether you journey alone or share the experience with others in a supportive community. Come discover how a day of silence can open your heart to God’s gentle presence and equip you to be a peaceful presence with others. Ann Kuehn is a spiritual director and retreat leader who loves helping people notice God’s presence in the everyday. A graduate of The Studion School for Spiritual Direction\, she offers one-on-one direction and silent retreats shaped by her years in ministry and her own journey of faith. At home\, Ann finds joy in baking sourdough\, walking her little dog Molly\, and tending backyard chickens. She and her husband\, Greg\, recently celebrated 26 years of marriage and love spending time with their three children and two future daughters-in-law. \nLunch (12 noon – 1:00) \nAfternoon Breakout Sessions (1:00-2:00 pm)\nOption 1: “Go Away\, Come Closer: Factors that Encourage and Hinder Our Growth in Community” with Cory Siebel. As humans\, we have been designed for relationship. Within the church\, we recognize that community can play a powerful role in enabling our healing and growth. However\, growing together in community isn’t always easy. At times\, we may long for connection. At other times\, we may struggle with impulses that undermine our relationships with one another. Drawing upon the voices of both Christian theology and psychology\, this session first explores several key factors that can hinder our growth in community. It then highlights perspectives and practices that can aid us in fostering healthy\, growing relationships with one another. Cory Seibel is a professional counsellor who operates his own private practice\, Daybreak Counselling\, in Edmonton. Cory also is part of the teaching faculty for the Psychotherapy and Spirituality program for St. Stephen’s College at the University of Alberta\, and teaches psychology of religion at Concordia University of Edmonton. Cory has an MA in counselling from Central Seminary in Kansas City and has undertaken additional doctoral studies in counselling through Washington University of Virginia. Prior to transitioning into the counselling profession\, Cory spent nearly three decades as a pastor and seminary professor. Along the way\, he earned two degrees in practical theology\, an MTh from Spurgeon’s College and a PhD from the University of Pretoria. He has published three books and numerous articles and is a frequent guest speaker.\n\nOption 2: “Life and Faith in the Trauma Bay” with Chantalle Grant. Through her work and life\, Chantalle has experienced the struggles of raising a young family in the midst of difficult surgical training (and a pandemic) which has tested her faith. While her hard work had the appearance of being outwardly charitable\, the ensuing burnout led to an attitude of selfishness and struggles with her faith. She is currently re-learning what it looks like to incorporate her relationship with God into her current practice as a surgeon and how to be truly present for the sake of others—from the most mundane of days to the life-changing moments in the ER.  Chantalle Grant was raised in Edmonton\, Alberta\, where she attended Greenfield Community Church for most of her childhood and young adulthood. She is now living and working in Vancouver\, British Columbia as a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon at Vancouver General Hospital and attends Olivet Baptist Church. Chantalle completed her medical school and surgical residency at the University of Alberta\, as well as a Fellowship in Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at the University of Toronto and a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Alberta. \nPlenary Session #3: Getting Away for the Sake of Others: Silence\, Solitude and Sustenance (2:15-3:15 pm)\nMark 6:31-“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” As Christians we are called to love our neighbours as we love ourselves. But how do we do this without succumbing to burnout? In this session we consider the spiritual practices of silence and solitude. \nClosing (3:15-3:30 pm) \n

SUMMARY:The Weight of Our Oneness: Loving One Another in a World of Division
DESCRIPTION:2024 All Church Conference \nThe Weight of Our Oneness:\nLoving One Another in a World of Division\nWith Wayne Stapleton \nBreakout sessions by Michael DeMoor\, Jacquie Baker & Todd Weekes\, Randal Rauser\, and Lori Schmidt. \nDivision seems to be a hallmark of this age. In so many ways\, institutions and people are finding themselves at odds with others\, torn apart by tension. It is hard to understand what can be unifying nationally\, relationally\, or even in the church. In local churches\, and at large in the overall Christian movement\, unity is suffering. However\, the work of God through Jesus Christ was intended to be a work of unity. Jesus taught the disciples to be unified with each other\, and the Apostle Paul instructed the churches to be unified; unity is meant to be a hallmark of the church of Jesus Christ. However\, we don’t see it. During the conference\, we will explore the scriptural importance of unity for the church’s identity\, for its witness\, and for its work. Church oneness testifies to its character as a work of the one true God. Church oneness fortifies its witness to the powerful redemption of Jesus Christ. Church oneness is crucial to its effectiveness in Spirit-led ministry. \nAdditional Info: This conference will include snacks and beverages on Friday night as well as lunch on the Saturday. Childcare on Saturday (Kindergarten through grade six) is available. \nWayne Stapleton\, VP of Cross-Cultural Engagement & Emerging Leader Engagement for the North American Baptist Conference. Wayne is a second career pastor\, having worked as a financial analyst and management consultant before getting a seminary degree. Wayne was on staff at Grace Community Church in Detroit\, Michigan for four years before leading a church restart in nearby Warren\, Michigan. Wayne pastored Renewal Church for over 9 years. Since 2019\, Wayne has been a member of the Executive Team of the North American Baptist Conference of churches. Wayne has been married to his wife Tonja for 25 years and have two sons\, Stephen\, in his second year of seminary\, and Adam\, who is a Senior this Fall at Kalamazoo College\, just starting his last year on the football team. \n  \nTentative Schedule \nFriday Evening (7:00-8:30 pm) \nWelcome & Worship (7:00-7:30 pm) \nPlenary #1: The Weight of our Oneness (7:30-8:30 pm) \nSaturday (9:00am-3:30pm) \nCoffee & Welcome (9:00-9:15 am) \n Worship (9:15-945 am) \nPlenary #2: The Witness of our Oneness (9:45-10:45 am) \nMorning Breakout Sessions (11:00 – 12 noon) \nWhat is mere Christianity? – Dr. Randal Rauser\, Veritas Solutions. Jesus established one church\, and yet today there are thousands of denominations which vary greatly in doctrine and practice. In the midst of all that complexity\, what does it mean to be a Christian? In this talk\, Randal explores the concept of “mere Christianity” to understand what it truly means to follow\, and believe in Jesus. Randal Rauser is the Director of Faith-Based Organization Investigations at Veritas Solutions and was a theology professor at Taylor Seminary for twenty years. Randal has a PhD from Kings College\, University of London\, and is the author/co-author of sixteen books. \nEmpathetic Communication – Don’t Get Stuck in the Mudhole – Jacquie Baker & Todd Weekes\, Stephen Ministers. In this session\, Jacquie and Todd will talk about how empathy can help us navigate difficult conversations effectively. Empathy involves encouraging others to share their feelings and actively listening in a non-judgmental way. The Apostle Paul encourages this when he calls us to\, “Rejoice with those who rejoice\, weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15). By creating a safe space\, validating emotions\, and suspending judgment\, we foster deep\, supportive connections\, focusing on others’ experiences without dismissing or minimizing them. Jacquie Baker is Assistant Principal at Johnny Bright School in Edmonton and is a Stephen Ministry Leader at Greenfield Community Church. Todd Weekes is a social worker who has been practicing in the field for 33 years. He is currently a Team Lead in a government program supporting young adults transition into adulthood. Todd is also a Stephen Ministry Leader at Greenfield Community Church. He is passionate about growing people’s strengths in communication and networking with others. \nLunch (12 noon – 1:00) \nAfternoon Breakout Sessions (1:00-2:00 pm) \nFinding and Navigating the Faultlines – Dr. Michael DeMoor\, The King’s University. We live in a world (and in churches\, families\, neighbourhoods) that are divided in a lot of different ways. Negotiating those divisions can be especially difficult when we don’t know where they are: which differences are divisions? Which divisions can be bridged and how? When can we hope for reconciliation or agreement\, when must we settle for toleration\, and what must we not tolerate? We will explore some of this terrain\, focussing on figuring out what kinds of divisions we face in our lives in order to figure out where to go once we’ve identified them. Michael DeMoor is the Dean of Social Sciences and Professor of Social Philosophy at The King’s University. He has been at King’s since 2009 and teaches courses on (inter alia) human rights\, markets and society\, the history of political thought\, democracy\, and war and peace. In his spare time (such as it is) he enjoys birding\, hiking\, and arguing with people about hockey. \nBridging the Gap: Managing Difficult Conversations for Meaningful Connections – Lori Schmidt\, President of Loral Management Group. Managing difficult conversations involves following the principles of James 1:19: Be quick to listen by understanding the other person’s perspective\, slow to speak by carefully considering your words\, and slow to anger by maintaining emotional control. These steps foster patience\, grace\, and meaningful connections in challenging discussions. Lori Schmidt is a facilitator and coach renowned for empowering non-profit agencies and business leaders to build resilience and foster collaboration. With extensive experience and a compassionate perspective as a Stephen Ministry Leader at Greenfield Community Church\, Lori offers insightful guidance on developing meaningful strategies that enhance organizational and personal relationships. \nPlenary Session #3: Working from our Oneness (2:15-3:15 pm) \nClosing (3:15-3:30 pm) \n

SUMMARY:Redeeming Human Sexuality
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be human? Is marriage just for a man and a woman? How do we understand sexual orientation or same-sex attraction? And how does the Bible serve as a guide in answering these questions? Every day the church faces these questions. More often than not\, the resulting discussions are likely to get heated. Perhaps it is time to take a step back for a deeper look at the issues in way that fosters civil discussion. \nOver four Sunday nights — March 17\, 24\, April 7\, and 14 — we will explore Christian approaches to sexual identity and gender from the fields of science\, the Bible\, theology\, and experience. Rooted in Scripture and conversant with the wider culture\, we will seek to understand better what it means to be whole beings in a way that is faithful to God’s call to live in his kingdom and love our neighbour. \nCourse Details \n\nSessions: Sunday evenings\, 5:30-8:00 pm in the MPR\nCost: $60/person for the entire four-week course (includes a light supper)\nSupper will be served at 5:30 pm followed by two 50-minute sessions (with a break in between)\nChildcare may be provided during the sessions if there is enough need (please indicate ages and number of children when registering)\nThis course is open to junior high age and up at parents’ discretion\n\nOutline of Sessions \n\nMarch 17 – Postures and Approaches – Tyler Williams (Greenfield; Affiliate Professor\, Kairos); Scientific Approaches – Heather Looy (Professor of Psychology\, The King’s University\, Edmonton).\nMarch 24 – Biblical & Hermeneutical Approaches – Tyler Williams (Greenfield; Affiliate Professor\, Kairos) & Jo-Ann Badley (former Dean of Theology at Ambrose Seminary\, Calgary).\nApril 7 – Theological Approaches — Randal Rauser (Investigator\, Veritas Solutions; former Professor of Theology at Taylor Seminary\, Edmonton) & Doug Harink (Professor Emeritus of Theology\, The King’s University\, Edmonton).\nApril 14 – Pastoral Care Approaches — Cory Seibel (Cornerstone Counselling and former Pastor at Central Baptist Church\, Edmonton) & Tyler Williams (Greenfield; Affiliate Professor\, Kairos).

SUMMARY:Authentic Spirituality: Following the Way of Jesus in the Details of our Lives with Kent Carlson
DESCRIPTION:2023 All Church Conference \nAuthentic Spirituality: Following the Way of Jesus in the Details of our Lives\nWith Kent Carlson\nBreakout sessions by Kerri Ankers\, Len Thompson\, Witty Sandle\, and more. \nWhat does it mean to be authentic? Particularly as a Christ follower? In our time together\, Kent Carlson will explore how we are formed as individuals and how we often live out of a false self rather than an authentic true self. This false self is cultivated as a defense mechanism in response to unmet needs and pivotal life events\, and it erects a barrier to genuine intimacy with both God and others. Driven by unfulfilled needs for security\, affection\, and power\, individuals craft coping strategies that mold their false programs for happiness. Kent will speak to the significance of recognizing and dismantling the false self\, and authentically following the way of Jesus in all the details of our lives. \nAdditional Info: This conference will include snacks and beverages on Friday night as well as lunch on the Saturday. Childcare on Saturday (Kindergarten through grade six) is available. \n  \nKent Carlson\, NorCal Regional Minister\, former VP of Spiritual Formation for NAB\nAs NorCal Regional Minister Kent works with association leaders to plant churches\, develop leaders and resource existing congregations. Kent is the founding pastor of Oak Hills Church where he served from 1984 to 2016 and is currently Pastor Emeritus. He joined the NAB staff in January of 2016 in a new role\, pioneering Leadership Formation. Kent is also the co-author (with Mike Lueken) of Renovation of the Church: What Happens When a Seeker Church Discovers Spiritual Formation. He is a graduate of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and is pursuing his Doctor of Ministry program at Sioux Falls Seminary. Kent\, a native of Chicago and a rabid Cubs fan\, has been married to his wife\, Diane\, since 1982. They have three daughters\, two granddaughters\, and far too many animals. \n  \nTentative Schedule \nFriday Evening (7:00-8:30 pm) \nWorship\, Plenary #1: What is Spiritual Formation & Authentic Spirituality? \nSaturday (9:00am-3:30pm) \nWorship\, Plenary #2: Understanding our True & False Self \nMorning Breakout Sessions: \nDeveloping a Rule of Life – Len Thompson\, Urban Sanctuary. A Rule of Life is a set of guidelines that support or enable us to live our life intentionally. Like a trellis that offers support and guidance for a plant\, helping it grow in a certain direction\, a Rule of Life helps you grow in a certain direction (e.g.\, love for God and others). In this session we will take some first steps towards crafting a personal Rule of Life. Len Thompson is the founding director of Urban Sanctuary\, Edmonton\, AB\, and is currently the director of spiritual direction at Vanguard College. He lives on a hobby farm and has sheep. \n“Ears to hear” – Kerri Ankers\, Desert Streams. What if praying is not just about talking to God but actually taking the time to LISTEN? How would that change the way we pray for others? How would that change the way we make decisions? We’ll spend some time understanding and building a case for listening prayer but also have the chance to actually do it!  Kerri Ankers has been serving and teaching with Desert Streams Healing Ministries for nearly 20 years. Through this ministry she is able to pursue her passion of praying for people and listening to God with\, and for them. She loves people\, a good book\, good coffee and worshipping Jesus. \nLunch \nAfternoon Breakout Sessions: \nThe Enneagram – Why am I the way I am and why are you like that? – Witty Sandle\, The King’s University. The enneagram provides a personality map that can not only help us understand our own behavioural patterns\, but also how others are wired. If we are courageous enough to look in the mirror and beyond our false self surface\, we can use this tool to set us on a pathway towards wholeness and a life infused with love for self and others. This is a primer serving as an introduction to those unfamiliar with the enneagram or who want a refresher of the basics. Witty Sandle works as the Career and Vocational Counsellor at The King’s University in Edmonton\, AB\, where she also directs the work of the Centre for Career and Calling. She combines her professional career development background with her spiritual direction skillset\, offering spiritual direction\, retreat and workshop facilitation. She is a certified MBTI practitioner and an enneagram enthusiast. She graduated from Portland Seminary in 2019 with a Masters in Spiritual Formation and Certificate in Spiritual Direction. Find out more about Witty’s work at: www.everydaypilgrimages.org \nThe Bible Isn’t Just Another Book: Reading like a Christian – Dr. Jo-Ann Badley\, former Dean of Theology\, Ambrose Seminary\, Calgary. We read a poem from Mary Oliver differently than we read the Cheerios box. We make the distinction without thinking. So what skills make us particularly Christian readers of the Bible? In this session\, we will identify and practice skills to be better readers of Scripture. Jo-Ann Badley retired in 2022 from Ambrose University. She taught New Testament and interpretation of the Bible for over forty years. She now enjoys a slower pace of life and more time with her children and grandson. She is also a Fringe enthusiast–she saw 35 plays in 2023! \nPlenary Session #3: Discernment\, Engagement\, & Attachment \n
